S-92 Helicopter Aviation Art

This is a graphite pencil on bristol paper drawing I did of a PHI Sikorsky S-92 sitting on the heli-deck of a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. In the top left of the picture you can see the drilling rig itself with drilling pipe stacked in storage. The big round tubes in the middle of the picture are encasements that are used during drilling to stabilize the drill pipe. The aircraft has already landed and shut down it's engines with it's blades stopped and the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) running. This keeps the ice cold air conditioner running while the crew waits for it's passengers!

I drew this piece from four picture I had taken; one of the aircraft, one of the oil rig in the foreground, one of the rig in the background, and one of the crew chief on the left. Compiling these four pictures into something that "looked right" was quite a challenge. I started with the background and had to throw away three before I got the effect that I wanted. Then I completed the aircraft, and finished up with the deck and shadowing. Working from the top of the picture to the bottom is another technique I use to avoid smudging the graphite.

While the two pilots are staying in the cockpit to complete manifests and paperwork, the crew chief (far left) will assist the deck crew and HLO (Helicopter Landing Officer) with loading the passengers and baggage. The crew chief has a head set on and can speak to the pilots through the cord that is hooked up to the aircraft.

The Sikorsky S-92 is a medium lift helicopter developed from the military S-70 Blackhawk helicopter. Weighing 26,500 pounds, it carries three crewmembers and up to eighteen passengers.

This drawing is sized 18x24 inches, and allows space for a matte. This is a limited edition print with only 225 being produced.
